Using personality factors as a matching tool Although research has identified outcomes of mentoring, we know little about which aspects of mentoring relationships that are beneficial for both parties. We addressed calls in the literature to investigate whether specific characteristics of the participants in the dyad influence the success of the relationship (Turban & Dougherty, 1994). Specifically we present the importance of analyzing personality factors, age and gender in order to specify their influence of success as a result of the dyad. Our framework was the “big five” personality factors. In this research we investigated which specific personality dimensions of the mentor and protégé respectively, and age and gender of the two that are critical for the success of mentoring. Results Using correlation test, ANOVA, T-test and regression analysis linear relations were shown to exist between personality variables and perceived success, age and perceived success and gender constellation and success. The relations were found between all personality factors and both the mentor and the protégé, and the study showed that clustered significance were especially strong between the personality dimensions extraversion and agreeableness. As consequence to this research we would recommend that compatibility on personality are taken in as a considering variable when mentor protégé relationships are created. By advising the mentors and protégés on what traits they shall look for in an upcoming mentor relation it will be possible to act proactive instead of reactive in the actual process.
